Representing Bangladesh at Tehran State Funeral
Speaker of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament), Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, has officially paid his final respects to late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during the formal state funeral ceremonies held in Tehran. Leading a high-level Bangladeshi diplomatic delegation, Speaker Hafiz Uddin represented the government and people of Bangladesh in conveying deep condolences to the bereaved leadership and citizens of Iran.
The solemn mourning gathering in Tehran drew numerous heads of state, parliamentary speakers, and international envoys from across Asia, the Middle East, and the broader Islamic world. Speaker Hafiz Uddin placed a formal floral wreath during the official ceremony, reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to mutual institutional respect and diplomatic solidarity during times of national mourning.
Bilateral Meeting With Iranian Parliament Speaker
On the sidelines of the funeral proceedings, Speaker Hafiz Uddin held a formal courtesy meeting with his counterpart, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. During the exchange, the Bangladesh Speaker expressed profound sympathy on behalf of the Jatiya Sangsad and recalled the condolence motion unanimously adopted in Dhaka immediately following the announcement of Ayatollah Khamenei’s passing.
“Even in moments of deep national grief, parliamentary diplomacy serves as a vital bridge between nations. We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran and look forward to fostering even stronger legislative, cultural, and economic ties between our two historic parliaments,” Speaker Hafiz Uddin noted during the bilateral discussion.
The Iranian side expressed warm gratitude to Bangladesh for dispatching such a senior state representative to attend the ceremonies. Both legislative leaders briefly touched upon future avenues for collaboration, including the active formation of a Bangladesh-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group, expanding bilateral trade in petrochemicals and ready-made garments (RMG), and establishing direct air connectivity between Dhaka and Tehran once regional stability fully resumes.
