Dhaka and Rabat Move Closer on Economic Integration
In a significant move to deepen South-South cooperation and expand economic footprints across North Africa, Bangladesh and Morocco have formally agreed to explore comprehensive partnerships in high-value industrial sectors. The consensus was reached during a high-profile courtesy call paid by the newly appointed Ambassador of Morocco to Bangladesh, H.E. Ms. Lalla Bouthaina El Kerdoudi El Koulali, on the Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, H.E. Ms. Shama Obaed Islam, M.P., at the ministry on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
The meeting marked a renewed diplomatic push to maximize trade balances between the two nations under the newly formed administrative framework led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Both dignitaries engaged in expansive discussions spanning cross-border investments, heavy manufacturing setups, ready-made garments, and crucial policy relaxations required to ensure a frictionless business environment.
Joint Ventures: Shipbuilding, Maritime, and Pharmaceuticals
During the constructive dialogue, Ambassador El Koulali placed a robust proposal on the table, inviting Bangladeshi conglomerates to engage in massive joint ventures. Highlighting Morocco’s unique geographical placement as a highly stable strategic hub giving immediate tariff-free entry into lucrative European and African markets, she underscored the immense potential of commercial syndicates in the **textile, ready-made garments (RMG), and pharmaceutical sectors**.
“Bangladesh is a globally recognized manufacturing champion. By blending Dhaka’s industrial production scale with Rabat’s advanced logistical integration and market access agreements, both nations can easily capture untapped market segments across the EMEA region,” the Moroccan Ambassador noted during the exchange.
Welcoming the proposals, State Minister Shama Obaed Islam stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is operating on an aggressive “Economic Diplomacy Action Plan” to support global investors. She specifically identified **shipbuilding and maritime collaboration** as two heavily promising frontiers where Bangladeshi expertise in small-to-medium ocean-going vessels can merge perfectly with Morocco’s expanding Atlantic and Mediterranean port infrastructures. The discussions additionally encompassed standard bilateral commodities, including jute and diversified jute products.
Manpower Exportation and Mutual Visa Waiver Agreements
A major breakthrough achieved during the courtesy call was Morocco’s explicit determination to broaden institutional cooperation regarding **manpower recruitment**. The Ambassador expressed Morocco’s growing domestic demand for highly skilled and semi-skilled Bangladeshi technical personnel, engineers, and construction professionals to sustain the Kingdom’s massive infrastructural expansion projects ahead of major upcoming global events.
To guarantee seamless execution, State Minister Shama Obaed Islam strongly emphasized the immediate necessity of pursuing a **mutual visa waiver agreement** for official and diplomatic passport holders, alongside creating streamlined visa processing channels for genuine business delegates. Reaffirming the long-standing, historic ties between Dhaka and Rabat, the State Minister concluded by stressing the importance of launching regular cultural and sports exchanges to boost grassroots people-to-people connections, ensuring that the geopolitical partnership transitions into a highly prosperous, multi-dimensional reality.
