An alleged commander of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) was shot and killed in a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya upazila early Thursday. The fatal shooting occurred around 4:30 AM in the Block H-29 area of Rohingya Camp-8 West.
Details of the Ambush
The deceased was identified as 34-year-old Md. Jubayer, son of Rahmat Ullah and a resident of Camp-8 West. Additional Deputy Inspector General (ADIG) Mohammad Siraj Amin, commanding officer of the 14 Armed Police Battalion (APBn), confirmed the incident to the media. According to police sources, Jubayer was widely known within the camp as an ARSA commander.
The attackers are suspected to be members of a rival armed faction, the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO). Police reports indicate that an armed group consisting of 20 to 25 individuals, allegedly led by a man named Mosa Harun, targeted Jubayer and fired 10 to 12 rounds of bullets.
During the ambush, Jubayer sustained three to four bullet wounds across different parts of his body. Following the attack, local Rohingya residents rescued him and rushed him to the nearby MSF hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Police Action and Investigation
ADIG Mohammad Siraj Amin stated that legal action has been initiated regarding the violent incident. He further assured that a thorough investigation and police operations are currently underway to accurately identify and apprehend the perpetrators involved in the targeted killing. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions and deadly turf wars between rival armed factions within the densely populated refugee camps.
